Haines to Anchorage
Our ferry, the Matanuska, docked in Haines, AK on June 9 and we began our 3 day drive to Homer, AK. Shortly after leaving Haines, we crossed back into Canada and began our drive through the Yukon. Just before the border crossing, there was a black bear standing by the road.
The only time I have been nervous on this trip was during the first part of our drive in the Yukon. The photos could not even begin to do it justice. It was barren, rugged, unforgiving, and truly beautiful. We went hundreds of miles, however, without seeing many cars and we had no phone service. I couldn't help but wonder what we would do if our car broke down. I breathed a bit easier when we were out of that area, but we will need to cross it again on our way out of Alaska. As I said, the photos just don't do it justice. There were also the little critters that skittered or, more accurately, darted across the road. They scared me because they came out of nowhere and the minute you thought they had made it across, they would turn around and dart back toward your car.
